Good news! OpenAI has teamed up with Ginkgo bioworks to see what would happen if you hooked ChatGPT 5 models up to a state of the art autonomous bio lab. Well, after 36,000 experiments OpenAI and Ginkgo were able to demonstrate a 40% improvement in cell free protein synthesis over the current state of the art methods. But this wasn't simply an automated process, this was GPT 5 designing the experiments and then improving subsequent runs based on the data that it got back. So there we have it, recursive self improvement of protein synthesis in a fully automated bio lab. This is fine.
