Google has launched Skills in Chrome, a new feature that allows users to create reusable AI prompts and execute them across any webpage with a single click. The functionality integrates with Gemini through Chrome's sidebar, enabling users to save frequently used prompts and apply them to current pages or multiple open tabs simultaneously.
To create a Skill, users write a prompt within Gemini and save it from their chat history for future use. Examples include calculating nutritional information from recipes or generating product comparisons whilst shopping. Once saved, users can trigger these Skills by typing a forward slash, making complex AI workflows instantly accessible across their browsing experience.
Google is also providing a library of pre-built Skills for common tasks, eliminating the need for users to create everything from scratch. Early testing revealed the most popular applications were health and wellness calculations, shopping comparisons, and document summarisation.
The feature positions Google competitively against similar offerings from Anthropic's Skills in Cowork and OpenAI's custom GPTs, but with a significant advantage in distribution. Chrome's three billion user base could rapidly create a substantial ecosystem of custom AI workflows if even a small percentage adopts the technology. The feature is rolling out today to Chrome desktop users signed into Google accounts, initially supporting English only.
