xAI has launched the Grok Text-to-Speech API. Five voices, 20 languages, and expressive controls built directly into the text. The new Grok Text-to-speech API is now in beta and the pricing is worth noting, just over $4 for a million characters. OpenAI charges $15 per million for their standard TTS. ElevenLabs starts at around $300 dollars per million. xAI is pricing this Grok tool to compete. The expressive controls are pretty cool, instead of a separate tone parameter, you write tags inline. Pauses, sighs, chuckles, w, singing - all scriptable in the text string. ElevenLabs still leads on voice quality and customisation. OpenAI has the market share. But at four dollars and twenty cents per million characters - yes, that number is almost certainly deliberate - xAI is making a compelling case.
