Anthropic launches Claude Duet, a proactive agent that comes to you with what needs doing and keeps working when you step away. OpenAI buys Orchestra Bio as its Rosalind agents find a new lead in neurodegeneration, Claude designs scorpion antivenom candidates, Gemini joins Google Maps on CarPlay, and Unitree unveils a kung fu bodyguard robot. Here's today's AI news.
Anthropic has opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a new standalone app where Claude works as a proactive agent. Instead of waiting for you to ask, it comes to you with what needs your attention from your email and calendar, completes tasks you hand it, and keeps working when you step away. Crucially, it checks with you before acting on your behalf. It's Anthropic's answer to OpenAI's dots and xAI's Grok Bot. Duet runs on Opus 5.5, picks up the memory and skills already in your Claude account, and you can message it by text or voice. It's waitlisted for Pro and Max users in the US and any background work counts toward your usage limits.
OpenAI is pushing deeper into drug discovery. It has acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup whose agents help biopharma teams coordinate drug development by monitoring studies, tracking timelines and flagging delays. The team joins Rosalind, OpenAI's life-sciences suite. And GPT-Rosalind has already surfaced a new lead - thousands of Rosalind agents ran in parallel, connecting gene-expression data from millions of mouse brain cells with the scientific literature. Their suggestion: in Perry syndrome, a rare neurodegenerative disorder, cholesterol may not be reaching the neurons that need it. That's now a specific mechanism scientists can test.
Anthropic's Science Blog has Claude designing potential treatments for scorpion stings. Scorpions sting around 1.2 million people a year, and antivenoms are often expensive or in short supply. Working largely on its own for 64 hours in Claude Science, with just four human check-ins, Claude generated more than 318,000 protein designs against five scorpion neurotoxins. Two hundred and eleven were tested in the lab, and 17 bound their targets, the best with single-digit nanomolar affinity. It's an early step: they were tested against lab-made toxins rather than real venom, and nobody has shown they neutralise anything in animals yet.
Google has brought Gemini to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay. While you're navigating, tap the Gemini icon and just talk to it. You can ask for the best place to park, find a park with city views, check whether now is a good time to go given the crowds and weather, or start a route that avoids tolls. You can also report crashes and road disruptions without touching the screen. It's the first voice assistant Google Maps has had on CarPlay, bringing iPhone drivers in line with Android Auto. It's live in the US now - with a global rollout under way.
Unitree has unveiled the H2-X, which it calls the Kung Fu Legend Guardian. It's a security and rescue version of its H2 humanoid, around 1.8 metres tall, and the demo shows flying kicks, martial arts routines, lifting a car and surviving big drops. Unitree claims up to eight hours of endurance, without saying under what conditions. There's no price or release date yet, and the standard H2 costs around 30,000 dollars. The announcement ends with a polite request to use the robot safely and in a friendly manner.
